4D Grain Growth

Grain growth is the process of the average grain size increasing during high temperature processing or operation, etc. It is ubiquitous in metals and has been shown to strongly affect bulk properties such as yield stress and creep resistance.

Using Diffraction Contrast Tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and multi-order phase field simulations, the Voorhees group studies grain growth in three dimensions and in time. Below is a reconstruction of a high-purity aluminum wire.
