John Thompson studies coarsening in solid-liquid mixtures, specifically the lead-tin (PbSn) eutectic system. Using mechanical serial sectioning, he performs three-dimensional analysis on PbSn alloys processed on the International Space Station. The goals of his research are to provide a direct comparison between experimental observation and theoretical coarsening models as well as gain insight into the factors that govern the the coarsening process.
John also served as the Vice President for Materials Science Student Association (MSSA) from 2010-11, where he organized department wide events and acted as a liaison between graduate students and the faculty.
